Established in 1837 as part of the same legislation creating Atlantic County, Passaic County is home to nearly 525,000 people. It is a beautiful area encompassing 186 square miles of land bordered by New York State to the north and Morris, Sussex, Essex, and Bergen Counties within New Jersey. Its size makes it the 18th largest county in New Jersey by area, while its population places it among the top nine counties in the state. With its hourglass-like shape, Passaic County boasts a diverse range of municipalities and landscapes. Its northern tip is West Milford Township, the largest city in terms of land area, with 78.30 square miles. Further south lies Prospect Park, the smallest municipality with .45 square miles of land. While the southern portion of Passaic County has much of the population concentrated into a third of the total area, further north is characterized by large lakes and watersheds with low-density development. All together, Passaic County's unique make-up offers citizens a variety of natural resources to appreciate and explore throughout its 16 municipalities!
Transportation
Passaic County offers essential roads for transportation and commuting through its borders. These major county roads include CR 502 (only in Wayne), CR 504, CR 509, CR 511, and CR 513. Those traveling in the area may use Route 19 to connect to the Garden State Parkway and Interstate 80 from Paterson or route 20 and 21 to move along the eastern border of the Passaic River. Moving through western sections of the county is possible with routes 23 and 3, in addition to 161, which passes through Clifton. Totowa is serviced by Route 62.
Travelers can also find U.S. Route 202 running north-south only in Wayne Township or U.S. Route 46 traversing east-west along any part of its route. Interstate 80 runs east-west through the county, while Interstate 287 adds convenience by passing through the mountainside regions of Passaic County. Clearly, this particular county has convenient access in many different ways, enabling locals and visitors alike to make their way within its borders without much effort.
